The word "environment" is used to capture a wide range of philanthropic activities, such as land conservation, protection of endangered species, preventing pollution, etc. Organizations fighting climate change have a much more focused mission, which is to prevent the warming of our planet caused by greenhouse gas emissions.

While there is some overlap in environmental charities and those working on climate change, the set of activities necessary are fundamentally different and are occasionally in opposition. Many people believe that fighting climate change is the most important social issue of our time, and they will want to donate specifically to organizations who are working on this important mission.
