In August 2023, tropical storm Hilary made landfall in Baja California before surging northward. Weakened to a tropical storm from a category four hurricane, Hilary is the first tropical storm in the region in 84 years. California has seen torrential rains and serious flooding, and flood watches have been put in effect for as many as 26 million Americans.
