How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

With COVID-19, many of the grants/foundations we work with were shifting funds from international aid to supporting more locally-based relief efforts, reducing (or eliminating) funds available. This was true for individual donors as well. As a result, our regular revenue streams were impacted, but with support of the PPP grants, we were able to continue work.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Staff had to work from home. Some of the work in the field had to shift to online, which is challenging in both Haiti and Honduras due to limited wifi capabilities. Teacher trainings moved from in person to online (when possible for the teachers). This is still the case in parts of Honduras today. Training schedules shifted, with more trainings necessary to accommodate fewer participants per training. In home work (going into family homes) was postponed, while lockdown regulations were in effect. Hygiene education curriculum expanded to incorporate practices to protect against COVID-19. Teams worked to provide training posters and videos, including how to make reusable masks at home, proper mask wearing and hand washing techniques, as well as how to make a hand washing station at home.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Training teams learned how to effectively deliver educational program content on a virtual platform. Trainings that were typically delivered to large groups, were rescheduled to smaller groups and held outdoors, socially distanced. Videos and posters were developed and distributed to support safe COVID practices. Videos were shared online and used by countries across Central America.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

PWW team in Honduras developed a foot pedal (reducing touch points) for the hand washing stations that will now be standard on all future hand washing stations. PWW will continue to use the face mask and hand washing posters and videos that were created during this time. Virtual trainings will continue to be offered, expanding our reach of educational programming.

Method for Attributing Outcomes

We don't know if the observed changes were caused by the nonprofit's program or something else happening at the same time (e.g., a participant got a raise). To determine causation, we take the outcomes we observe and subtract an estimate of the outcomes that would have happened even without the program (i.e., counterfactual outcomes).


We estimate the number of person-years of clean water the nonprofit provides by comparing the person-years actually achieved to the person-years that would have been achieved even in the absence of the nonprofit (the "counterfactual"). Some beneficiaries might have accessed clean water from other providers or on their own; these counterfactual successes must be netted out of the successes we observe. Otherwise, we would be attributing a change in a person's life (gaining clean water) to the nonprofit when it would have happened anyway. Few nonprofits estimate the counterfactual themselves, so we construct our own counterfactual estimate based on research and publicly available data. We research the average rate with which clean water access is increasing year over year in that location, and assume that, if the nonprofit had not intervened, that trend would have continued.

In 2020, we invested in our Honduras Country Director participating in a comprehensive WASH in Healthcare training program hosted by Emory University. We regularly work closely with specialized consultants who not only support program development, but serve to expand the knowledge and capabilities of our staff (at all levels). Finally, annual staff evaluations are focused on development with goal setting and support to meet those goals in the new year. These evaluations are designed to encourage employee growth.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Hygiene education is PWW's expertise. Healthy hygiene practices, in combination with safe water and sanitation, are critical to the general health and wellbeing of all people every single day. Without access to these most basic health protectors, vulnerable children and families face an even greater challenge to defend themselves against invasive pathogens, including viruses like COVID-19. With the widespread impact of COVID-19, PWW teams in Haiti and Honduras rapidly responded to the urgent need for more hygiene education and training. The work done in response to the crisis was not simply a short-term band-aid. All decisions were carefully considered with the objective of building upon our existing hygiene education programs and materials, expanding our reach through new channels, which PWW teams continue to use. Teams quickly shifted programs and created a variety of resources to get critical hygiene education out to the most vulnerable communities, including: *Radio and TV Public Service Announcements *Virtual workshops *Expansion of existing training programs to webinars *Developing new training videos to empower community members to construct hand washing and water tools at home. *Creating and distributing posters in essential public spaces (i.e. banks, supermarkets, border offices, and health centers) *Working closely with local government and other WASH organizations to expand reach of messages and trainings *Consulting on and supporting the building of latrines in essential areas. *Construction and placement of Touch-Free Hand washing stations in essential areas. *Reaching out to Community Agents and partners to continue sharing critical messages. Teams were designated as essential workers in the communities they serve and were able to continue this critical work. They partnered with local community members to continue programs, revising delivery of programs to limit points-of-contact, while consistently using personal protective equipment.

Our team is working in a completely new community. Based on results found during our first round of monitoring, we realize that more training is needed for our new implementers and community agents to sustain the high level results we strive to achieve. The training program will be modified to include additional layers for deeper understanding. Continued monitoring will help us measure results of the additional training.
