How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

The Parkinson's Foundation had a strong performing year financially, thanks to our diversified revenue portfolio despite the pandemic. While we did see a reduction in revenue for peer-to-peer fundraising events and special events, there was continued support from direct response and individual giving. Due to increased revenue, we were able to contribute 86% of revenue directly to our programs – our highest mission ratio ever.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

The Parkinson's Foundation hosts over 100 community education programs nationally and locally in communities across the country through our Chapter network. As a result of transitioning many programs into a virtual format, we were able to reach new communities. Indeed, we have seen thousands of constituents on one virtual webinar and are excited about the possibilities that the virtual format offers. We were also able to increase investment in our community grants program thanks to a strong financial performance.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Like many other organizations, the Parkinson’s Foundation took our already successful programs and pivoted formats accordingly while taking into consideration Covid precautions. We began offering many programs in a virtual format and also adjusted our language in print and on our website to address the ongoing pandemic across the country. Most importantly, we let our already vulnerable Parkinson’s community know that we were there to support them during Covid-19.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue to offer the virtual weekly education and wellness program, PD Health @ Home. Once our community education programs return to in-person, many will still provide a virtual component to reach more people within our Chapter network.

Additionally, our Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. James Beck, attends the American Academy of Neurology conference annually.

The Parkinson’s Foundation (PF) works with over 3,000 volunteers in our 17 chapters throughout the country. Over 100 of these volunteers are part of a robust network of Aware in Care ambassadors in 39 states who engage their local community to better serve people with Parkinson’s disease. Our Aware in Care Ambassadors are people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), caregivers or care partners (whether a spouse, sibling, child or friend of someone with PD), while others are professionals who work with people with PD (including speech language pathologists, nurses, and fitness instructors). PF works with national and local partners such as AARP and the VA to help expand our reach and services to those living with PD. We have a Research Advocate program, which is comprised of volunteers who lend their expertise and voices to research and drug discovery projects and also present at conferences and social engagements on behalf of PF.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Throughout the last year, we faced great uncertainty regarding Covid-19, as did the rest of the world. We had moments of hope and optimism where the pandemic seemed to be improving and moments where the pandemic took a turn for the worse. Through it all, we remained committed to putting people with Parkinson’s disease first. This meant planning our programs but also being ready to pivot and change formats if necessary. This adaptability has been a tremendous strength of the Parkinson’s Foundation and ensures that we are always ready to serve people with Parkinson’s in an optimal way.
