Mission: Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) is a volunteer-supported and community-based organization committed to national leadership in the fight to end AIDS. We provide prevention and care services to nearly 10,000 men, women and families that are living with, or affected by, HIV/AIDS in New York City, and advocate for scientific, evidence-based public health solutions for hundreds of thousands worldwide.
In 2017, GMHC was recognized as a Gold Prize winner of the Nonprofit Excellence Award, created by the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York to teach, recognize, and encourage outstanding management practices among New York's large and diverse nonprofit community.

Revenue for our largest fundraiser, AIDS Walk New York, fell by approximately 40% since 2019. Overall, we have been able to stabilize our income, thanks in part to a PPP loan which we applied for and received.
Due to social distancing, GMHC had to close its congregate meals program. We did start “GMHC on the Go,” a meals delivery and pick up program in its place, but it impacted our overall numbers. Our congregate meals program remains closed at this time. None of our programs shut down but some suffered from shrinking numbers due to the reliance on exclusive remote access.
We shifted many of our programs, including Prevention/Community Health, Mental Health and Substance Use support, to remote access/virtual technologies.
For HIV testing, GMHC began to offer self-testing kits with the support of the NY Health Dept. In fact, during the pandemic, we offered roughly 10% of all 3,000 HIV tests in NYC. Although we have reinstated in-person testing, we will continue to offer self-testing kits. Additionally, COVID necessitated new outreach strategies, including online advertising. We attracted new clients by way of Google ads, and we will continue this outreach among our other strategies.

GMHC’s Action Center elevates the voices of marginalized New Yorkers as advocates. We train and organize clients as community activists to heighten awareness of healthcare priorities, advance policy initiatives, and increase funding to support health services and disease prevention. The Action Center helps New York’s most marginalized community members to become leaders in community organizing and active participants in advocacy. In addition, GMHC has recently launched a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative to align GMHC staff around a shared understanding of structural and systemic racism with the goal of creating leaders within the HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ communities who will be more intentional about breaking down barriers to good health for marginalized communities.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges for GMHC. In March 2020, we pivoted most of our services to remote delivery in response to the pandemic. This included implementing weekly wellness checks of our clients and evolving our meals program to reach more people. In total, we have delivered more than 135,000 meals (as of July 23, 2021) to our clients since the pandemic started. In recent months with the availability of vaccines, we have restarted some in-person services, including HIV and STI testing. In response to COVID, we also launched a program called COVID Destroyers to prevent COVID-19 infections and provide mental health supports for the communities whom we serve. That initiative has recently shifted to a public education campaign in partnership with a creative agency to address vaccine hesitancy within the LGBTQ+ community.
