This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Integrate Health Inc. reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Administrative Capacity
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
We were unable to hold our annual fundraising event, and we were unable to send staff to key in-person meetings with funders. Some funders had decreased funds available due to healthcare financial committents. We applied for and received the PPP loan and thus were able to employ a full staff.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
As an organization deeply committed to the health of our local communities, we are thankful that the disease has not spread so quickly in Togo. We applaud the Minister of Health for his preparedness plan and swift action on containing the disease as the first case was discovered. At Integrate Health, we have made a number of changes to our regular programming including canceling unnecessary travel, allowing remote work and increasing communication about the virus. However, we understand that our employees who face the highest risk from the virus are those who often are left unprotected, the healthcare workers.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Integrate Health has created a preparedness plan for Integrate Health’s healthcare provider staff in accordance with international best practices and recommendations to ensure that our healthcare providers including Integrate Health’s Community Health Workers are well informed to prevent unnecessary illness from COVID-19. Furthermore, we are working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure that necessary equipment and medication remains available, amid stockouts of hand sanitizer and masks. We recognize that quality healthcare services save lives, not just during a pandemic, but every day and we will do everything to ensure that our program continues to move forward with essential services while minimizing risk for the healthcare providers.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We are examining our carbon footprint and realized that the decreased travel had a big impact in this area. We're evaluating future travel more stringently as a result. Remote work continues to be an option for office staff.

Outcomes: Changes in the lives of those served by a nonprofit. They can be caused by the nonprofit.
Costs: The money spent by a nonprofit and its partners and beneficiaries.
Impact: Outcome caused by a nonprofit relative to its cost.
Cost-effectiveness: A judgment as to whether the cost was a good use of resources to cause the outcome.
Outcome Metric
A child's life saved.
Outcome Data Source
Ratings are based on data the nonprofit itself collects on its work. We use the most recent year with sufficient data. Typically, this data allows us to calculate direct changes in participants' lives, such as increased income.
Outcome data collected through household surveys which were adapted from the 2013 Togo Demographic and Health Survey modules. These surveys were completed annually by data collectors with women ages 18-49 in 4 of the nonprofit's intervention catchment areas in Northern Togo using population weighted sampling.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We don't know if the observed changes were caused by the nonprofit's program or something else happening at the same time (e.g., a participant got a raise). To determine causation, we take the outcomes we observe and subtract an estimate of the outcomes that would have happened even without the program (i.e., counterfactual outcomes).
We model counterfactual mortality with the assumption that without the nonprofit, mortality in the nonprofit's community would have followed the national trend based on United Nations mortality data. These findings are preliminary; the nonprofit aims to publish 48-month results in a peer-reviewed journal.
Cost Data Source
After estimating the program's outcomes, we need to determine how much it cost to achieve those outcomes. All monetary costs are counted, whether they are borne by a nonprofit service deliverer or by the nonprofit’s public and private partners.
Program cost data reported by the nonprofit. Partner and beneficiary costs reported by the nonprofit or estimated by Charity Navigator.
We calculate impact, defined as the change in outcomes attributable to a program divided by the cost to achieve those outcomes.
Impact Statement
$1,800 saves the life of a child.
Benchmark for Rating
Impact & Results scores of community health programs are based on the cost of a disability-adjusted life year (DALY) averted relative to the G.D.P. per capita of the country in which the program operates. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they avert a DALY for less than than the G.D.P. per capita, and a score of 75 if they avert a DALY for less than three times G.D.P. per capita. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the benchmark for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.

Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
Initially, this project focused primarily on women as the main customers for family planning services. Over the project’s first 6 months, community feedback forums revealed that men also played an important role in a family’s decision to initiate family planning. IH staff also learned that women felt unable to consent to family planning adoption without their husband’s permission and that men expressed a strong desire to be part of the conversation. In response, IH introduced a male peer educator component to this project. The male peer educators have reported significant success in persuading men to support their wives in family planning, and in shifting men’s opinions on family planning for unmarried women and teens.
