This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Artwell Collaborative Inc. reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
Revenue
Staffing
Balance Sheet
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Due to the inability to run programming at the start of the pandemic ArtWell was not able to pay its contracted Teaching Artists for the full school calendar year. ArtWell’s revenue was impacted by the pandemic, especially from Individual donors. Due to the economic uncertainty surrounding the pandemic some individuals were either unable to or hesitant to match previous year’s donations. Foundation giving did not meet budget, however, this was due more to a shifting of priorities by several foundations that typically donated to ArtWell. Some foundations were willing to move their donations from restricted to unrestricted to allow ArtWell to weather the pandemic. ArtWell was also eligible for PPP loans and forgiveness.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
ArtWell faced significant uncertainty regarding the ability of our partners to continue to work with us considering the burdens they faced as they transitioned to online learning for the school year. We were not certain how our programs would translate in an online environment or what our teaching artist capacity would be. At a time when youth needed opportunities for expression and reflection even more, we were concerned that we would be limited in our ability to connect and serve our communities.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
ArtWell was able to pivot and present programs virtually to over 550 students during the 2020-21 school year. Because of established relationships, ArtWell Teaching Artists were able to work closely with partner sites to tailor virtual offerings. They created video content and facilitated synchronous online classes providing much needed space for expression and community. We honed our facilitation skills for online learning, and in the midst of this, we were able to also expand some partnerships including with Need In Deed, a service learning nonprofit and develop new partnerships with the Emlen School. Though not able to present our programs in person, we provided hundreds of ArtWell@Home art kits with art and school supplies for students to use in their online classes. One of our long-time partner teachers was especially excited about the chance for students to receive these art kits, and delivered them to all students, allowing her to see them for the first time all year.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
Despite the hurdles of this unsettling time, ArtWell sessions continue to create a sense of community for our students at program sites in North, West and Southwest Philadelphia neighborhoods. Our experience community building translates no matter the format and students remain responsive and receptive to the opportunities for creative expression. Going forward, ArtWell will consider how virtual programming might continue to be something we offer, even when we are able to return to in-person learning. Working virtually provides a significant opportunity to engage with more students in Philadelphia and beyond.
