Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
When Covid19 and the subsequent recession hit LA in March 2020, we knew our families and alumni would find themselves in increasingly vulnerable positions. We immediately took action, working to understanding our families' needs around basic supplies, technology for distance learning, quality of life, and more. We launched a fundraising campaign to bolster our Family Emergency and Investment Fund and pivoted our entire mentor process to virtual platforms. We began holding monthly, Covid-clean "Grab & Go" Distributions Events, partnering with Mentor Teams to pick up supplies for families lacking transportation. Another example is prioritizing access to childcare for families entering our Workforce Pathways. We learned through feedback that without childcare, new careers are inaccessible.

In 2021, Imagine LA undertook a full Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion audit, resulting in an EDI Strategic Plan to increase all staff and board's knowledge, self-awareness, and efficacy with regards to EDI.

Every day, Imagine LA is mobilizing communities and individuals to advance our mission. Examples include our strategic partnerships work, family fun events and Grab & Go supplies distributions, volunteer and mentor recruitment activities, nonprofit and business to grow our Economic Mobility Pathways, ongoing leadership in Family Service Providers Family Caucus and LA End Family Homelessness Strategy, and much more.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Since the start of the pandemic, our communities have faced unprecedented challenges, making Imagine LA’s work supporting families to maintain stability and thrive even more essential. We pivoted to serve our families in ways that allowed us to practice physical distancing while maintaining strong relationships. We moved all business operations and volunteer mentor recruitment, screening, & training to virtual Microsoft platforms. Our staff shifted to working remotely. We launched an all-out campaign to be extra-engaged with our current & alumni families & mentors. We raised more than $160k for our Family Emergency & Investment Fund to help both current & alumni families stay ahead of the pandemic’s financial fallout. This fund provides financial relief for short-term needs or to build families' long-term capacity. We raised the spending limit from $1k to $3k per family and broadened eligibility. To support our youth, in partnership with LAUSD, our staff & volunteers assisted to set all youth up for online learning. Our youths’ mentors also provided a trusted confidant & adult voice as families navigated the stress of having everyone at home. We ran biweekly Family Grab & Go Distributions or delivered critical supplies to families lacking transportation. Prior to the pandemic, we had launched our Workforce Development Pathways with Childcare & Enhanced Financial Wellness initiative, to help our families start or continue stable careers by creating streamlined pathways to living-wage careers while building families’ “financial fitness.” We played a key role in mobilizing the civic, faith, and corporate community to respond to the needs of families throughout L.A. In coordination with L.A. County DHS, LAHSA, and Mayor Garcetti’s office, we helped bring together over 72 community and faith organizations to create more homeless shelters on their properties. In partnership with DHS Housing for Health, we developed a COVID-19 best practices guide for families.
