This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
The Tandana Foundation Inc. reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Revenue
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
In 2019, the year before the pandemic started, 32% of our income was from program fees for the in-person intercultural programs we ran in Ecuador. By 2021, the percentage of program fees had dropped to 1.7% because in-person programs were not possible. We put our efforts into Remote Connection programs with schools and Virtual Ventures which would happen over Zoom and pivoted to more fundraising as opposed to running in-person programs for the time being.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
Since we were not able to run in-person intercultural programs in Ecuador or in Mali we pivoted to looking for direct donors for our Community Initiatives in both countries. We also started offering virtual opportunities which we called Remote Connection and Virtual Ventures.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Although we had to cancel all of our in-person programs we did not fire nor lay-off any staff members. We also started to focus more on sustainability and to look for major donations to help us build up more of a rainy-day fund and an endowment. We now have both in place and feel that we can weather the next storm to ensure our foundation continues to provide quality programs.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We really like our new program called Remote Connection. For example, we can pair a classroom in the USA with a classroom in Ecuador and they can, over a series of Zoom meetings, share a connection over local culture, customs, value, food, etc. It typically ends with the students in the USA holding a fundraiser for a project at the Ecuadorian student's school.

How has asking for feedback from the people you serve changed your relationship with them or shifted power - over decisions, resources, rules or in other ways - to them?
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our beneficiaries feel like they just receive benefits and don't provide as much as they wanted to for a certain project. By engaging them we make sure that we celebrate their contribution no matter the size and appreciate them for their collaboration.
What challenges does your organization face in collecting feedback from the people you serve?
It is difficult to get honest feedback from our clients
Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
Whenever we support a community initiative in Ecuador we are sure to check back in soon after the project is completed and sit down with community members to make sure that we listen to them and their experience. In one recent case it was suggested that we improve our communication and stay in touch more frequently, which we were happy to do!

The nonprofit organization presents evidence of strategic thinking through articulating the organization's mission
To support the achievement of community goals and address global inequalities through caring intercultural relationships that embody mutual respect and responsibility.
The nonprofit organization presents evidence of strategic thinking through articulating the organization’s vision.
Tandana is built on a first-person orientation toward other people in relationship. This stance gives to us and to our friends full human agency, the chance to act in meaningful ways and to participate in live encounters between different people. It allows us to see opportunities for collaborating to make dreams come true, rather than problems that require technical intervention. This orientation leads to a spirit of sharing, based on simple human values like respect and responsibility. An attitude of respect calls us to honor the ability of community members to define their own priorities and initiate their own projects. It builds confidence among community members, leading them to invest in collaboration with us. A commitment to responsibility leads us to follow through on our promises, offer ongoing friendship, and expect the same from our local partners. This value brings about complete, successful, and sustainable projects, instead of ones that break down or are left unfinished.

The nonprofit provides evidence of investment in leadership development
We have implemented a Professional Development Program. Global staff, Ecuador staff, and Mali staff have the opportunity to work with their supervisor each year to reflect on the professional goals that they have and make a path to reach those goals. Each interested staff member then applies for professional development funding and management selects the best proposals to fund. We started with a total budget of $3,000 and hope to increase it over the coming years. So far, 100% of the proposals have been accepted.

Raising Awareness
We look to find similar nonprofits in Ecuador and Mali and befriend them so that we can be a resource for one another. Additionally, our founder recently published a book chapter about Tandana's philosophy. We have also been working on a 15th-anniversary video series where we created 15 videos to celebrate 15 years of living our mission. These videos have been shared widely on social media.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Tandana recognized the severity of the pandemic and decided to put safety first. We pivoted from in-person programs to new programs that we called Remote Connection and Virtual Ventures, all while not firing or laying off a single staff member. We were patient and worked with our staff members remotely to re-train them for the new type of programs we would be offering.
