The Family Pantry is committed to sustainability. We have operated The Second Glance Thrift Shop to support the food program for the past 15 years. Covid -19 caused the shut down of the Shop in 2020 for 6 months and for 3 month is 2021. That was a $300,000 hit to our income stream. We had to eliminate our bottles and can redemption program that contributed almost $40,000 a year in 2020 and it has not resumed to date.
The Family Pantry is still curbside and this caused our client clothing boutique to be closed for all of 2020. This was a huge hit to our families who can barely afford food, much less clothing. In 2021 we operated a "pop up" boutique outside when the weather was good. This was a huge help to our families and helped us to resume fulfilling that part of our mission. We have also paused our Foods to Encourage program, which educates clients about food related health concerns such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
The Pantry is now permanently operating under our new food distribution model we call Pick and Pack. This is an incredibly efficient way to provide consistent and nutritious foods for our families. This system was designed and implemented in 2020 and refined with a complete Pantry renovation in 2021.
The Pick and Pack distribution is our new distribution method. We came to this decision after surveying our clients and our volunteers about the program. The clients asked that we do not return to the old model, due the the speed and anonymity of the shopping experience.

The Family Pantry of Cape Cod holds a leadership role across the Cape. We partner strategically with several organizations across the Cape to reduce food insecurity include the Cape Cod Fishermen's Alliance, and The Cape Cod Hunger Network. The ED has presented at the annual Philanthropy Partners meeting. The ED is the co chair of the Cape Cod Hunger Network. The ED is a very active member of the Lower Cape Leadership Forum working to address the nuances of the needs of the lower Cape. The ED sits on the Advisory board of the Greater Boston Food Bank. The Family Pantry has an active social media presence of Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and LinkedIn. The Family Pantry also hosts the Foods to Encourage program, educating low income families about health concerns resulting from poor nutrition.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Covid-19 has challenged the world including the Family Pantry of Cape Cod. We had to change our distribution model 6 times in 11 days at the start of the Pandemic. This has resulted in a permanently adapted distribution model we call "Pick and Pack. We leveraged our Mobile Pantry operation to build a comprehensive shopping list that families fill out and deliver to the Pantry. Volunteers then shop the order and return it to the client. We found through a broad client survey that our families prefer "pick and pack" due to the speed and anonymity if provides. We have maintained our "choice pantry" and see this as the "Instacart" of the Pantry industry. This shift in operation also required a major remodel of the building incurring significant cost that will set us up from a facilities point of view for the next 5-7 years. This was all done as the Pantry remained open and has not missed a day due to the Pandemic.
