In 2022 GiveDirectly began offering a $200 USD flexible learning and development stipend to all team members. The stipend can spend the stipend on any resources, training, or materials team members need to further their own learning & development this year.

We’ve partnered with USAID, The World Bank, The TED Audacious Project, UNHCR, UNICEF, NBACares, FCDO, The EU, Google.org, the Ikea Foundation, and many others. Through these partnerships and advisory relationships GiveDirectly spreads knowledge on delivering cash transfers efficiently, in the right contexts, and at the right times. We’ve run 19 randomized controlled trials on our programs with researchers at IDInsight, Innovations for Poverty Action, UCSD, UC Berkeley, MIT, Duke, Oxford, Princeton, University of Warwick, UChicago, Harvard, UCSC, Tufts, Indian School of Business, University of Michigan. These studies help to further the body of evidence around use cases for UCTs and offer insights on delivery strategies and 2nd-order effects. We participate in conferences like SXSW, EA Global, DevCon, Guaranteed Income Now and Basic Income Guarantee, as well as speaking with student and professional groups to share learnings from our programs and improve cross-sector collaboration.

GiveDirectly has launched programs in response to natural disasters and economic inequality in 2022. A worsening cycle of storms and drought is threatening safety and food supply for many in southern Africa. Tropical Storm Ana struck Malawi in January, washing away nearly 200K acres of crops and displacing hundreds of thousands of people (https://givedirectly.org/ana). GiveDirectly provided emergency cash relief to help families rebuild their lives. We’ve also launched a program to help farmers build resilience for future climate-caused droughts and floods (https://www.givedirectly.org/climate-adaptation/). Globally, these sorts of adaptation projects are dramatically underfunded compared to greenhouse gas mitigation efforts. In the U.S., we are immediately distributing one-time, $700 payments to families impacted by Hurricanes Fiona and Ian. In partnership with Google.org, we’re locating the most vulnerable people impacted by mapping poverty and storm-damage in communities in Florida and Puerto Rico. These transfer sizes are designed to cover the cost of common post-disaster recovery items, such as food, baby formula and diapers, first aid supplies, toiletries, portable generators, gas, and radios.
