Ratings are calculated from one or more beacon scores. Currently, we require either an Accountability & Finance beacon or an Impact & Results beacon to be eligible for a Charity Navigator rating. Note: The absence of a rating does not indicate a positive or negative assessment; it only indicates that we have not yet evaluated this organization.
See rating report below to learn why this organization is not currently eligible.
We recognize that not all metrics and beacons equally predict a charity’s success. The percentage each beacon contributes to the organization’s overall rating depends on the number of beacons an organization has earned.
Use the tool below to select different beacons to see how the weighting shifts when only one, two, or three beacons are earned.
Rating histories are available for a growing number of rated organizations. Check back later to see if this organization has a rating history!
Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers Southwest cannot currently be evaluated by our Accountability & Finance methodology due to only having one year of electronically-filed IRS Form 990 data. That may mean that this entity has electronically filed additional Forms 990 but they have yet to be processed and made public by the IRS.
To ensure year-to-year consistency the Encompass Rating System's Finance & Accountability beacon analyzes the three-year average of some data provided through the IRS 990.

This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers Southwest reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Fortunately, the financial structure of our organization remained stable during Covid. Our funders recognize that we are a well-managed and worthwhile organization and no funding was discontinued or affected by Covid.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
The pandemic affected us as we are a nonprofit that directly serves the elderly with free transportation to medical appointments, grocery trips, and other life-sustaining transportation needs. Our seniors chose to self-isolate based on health organization recommendations, which greatly reduced our need to assist with transportation. Our staff was committed to coming to the office each day, although we were prepared to work from home if necessary. We were committed to focusing on our seniors while they stayed home by mailing or delivering gift bags of goodies that they would enjoy and help keep them stimulated. Our staff made calls to our seniors each day to keep them engaged in conversation and let them know that we are always here for them. When grocery shopping was not possible for some of our at-risk seniors, we ordered the groceries and had them delivered ... and even paid for the food and delivery fees. Our seniors are our priority.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
As mentioned above, we pivoted our resources as our transportation requests diminished. Getting our seniors their groceries became important, so we began grocery delivery options so that our elderly could stay safely home. We began making friendly phone calls to engage our seniors and stave off loneliness. We also ordered puzzle books and other items useful to the elderly and created gift bags that were delivered to our care receivers. It was a nice treat for them and much appreciated by our seniors!
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
Grocery delivery, as well as giving grocery gift cards to our lowest-income seniors, are programs that are now permanently a part of our program. Grocery delivery was necessary during the pandemic to keep our elderly safe from Covid19, however the rising cost of food has affected many of our low-income seniors and we have implemented grant writing to receive funding that has helped us buy grocery gift cards to pass onto our seniors so that their budgets are not stretched so thin. Most of our seniors are on a fixed income and the higher cost of food has affected their finances terribly. We are committed to helping them with food insecurity.

The nonprofit organization presents evidence of strategic thinking through articulating the organization's mission
Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers Southwest, better known as Senior Rides and More, helps the frail and elderly who have aged out of driving by providing free one-on-one transportation using volunteers when available. If a volunteer is not available, our staff will assist in getting a Lyft/Uber car and driver for our care receiver, and we pay all costs associated with this ride share program. We assist those aged 65 and older, and again, our services are free to our eligible care receivers.

Raising Awareness
Senior Rides and More is the only organization in the Houston area that provides free one-on-one volunteer transportation for the elderly, therefore, collaboration with other similar nonprofits is challenging. However, we do collaborate with nonprofits that serve the senior population. This collaboration allows seniors to gain multiple levels of resources and assistance.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
These past couple of years have affected many nonprofits, mostly in a negative way. We have seen other nonprofits close their doors. Senior Rides and More saw a decline in client rides during Covid due to our elderly following the quarantine/isolation mandates. We pivoted to bring necessary services directly to them. Our funding remained steady, so we channeled some of that funding directly to our seniors by expanding services. We created the initiative of grocery delivery since our seniors did not feel safe going to the stores in-person. We paid all delivery fees, and even paid for the groceries if the senior identified as low-income. Our staff organized gift bags with puzzle books and useful items for our seniors, and delivered them to their doors. Phone calls were made to stave off isolation. When Covid vaccines because readily available, seniors were first in line and we answered the call to transport them to the vaccine sites and medical facilities. Thankfully we are now back to full transportation services and our seniors are making up for lost time.
