This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Talbot Humane Co reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
Staffing
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
It required a major pivot in how we reached the community and raised funds. With more than a year without in person events, and having to reach people in a remote fashion, we had to be creative. Thankfully our community came through with donations and support. We were able to continue to make budget and serve the community.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
Delivery of programs continued but differently. As we serve the public and their pets we did a great deal of appointment based services, drop off services, and all social distanced. Some of this made lag times in serving the public, but, the services continued.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We went to a great deal of online services, doing as much as possible via email, web-based services prior to appointments. Doing pet visitations, adoptions, animal drop off, spay/neuter, microchipping all by appointment times verses how it was done before.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We realized that the public is actually better served with appointment based services and we have continued this process. We had the opportunity to move much of our applications, surveys etc. to web-based and it has made a great positive difference as well.

This organization reported that it is collecting feedback from the constituents and/or communities it serves. Charity Navigator believes nonprofit organizations that engage in inclusive practices, such as collecting feedback from the people and communities they serve, may be more effective.
Who are the people you serve with your mission? Describe briefly.
Residents of the midshore of Maryland's eastern shore, specifically Talbot and Dorchester counties. Our mission serves the animals of this community. A number of our programs focus on ensuring at need communities and their pets receive the care and attention they deserve.
How is your organization collecting feedback from the people you serve?
Electronic surveys (by email, tablet, etc.), Paper surveys, Community meetings or town halls, Constituent (client or resident, etc.) advisory committees, Suggestion box/email
How is your organization using feedback from the people you serve?
To identify and remedy poor client service experiences, To identify bright spots and enhance positive service experiences, To inform the development of new programs/projects, To identify where we are less inclusive or equitable across demographic groups, To strengthen relationships with the people we serve
With whom does your organization share the feedback you got from the people you serve?
Our staff, Our board
How has asking for feedback from the people you serve changed your relationship with them or shifted power - over decisions, resources, rules or in other ways - to them?
Feedback has been essential in ensuring our services are in fact needed and serving the community in an efficient and useful manner. We reassessed some programs which we (the team) thought were necessary but were simply not being utilized and chose to use those resources- time and money- on programs the community shared they needed and wanted.
What challenges does your organization face in collecting feedback from the people you serve?
It is difficult to get the people we serve to respond to requests for feedback, It is hard to come up with good questions to ask people, It is difficult to identify actionable feedback
Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
We identified the area where the community we serve felt their was a service "hole". That was the fact owners had 2 choices when they had an acute issue with their pets, they either paid for the service or had to surrender their pet to our shelter or another shelter if they could not afford the medical need, supplies etc. We recognized this was a source of increased animal surrenders to our shelter, which in turn increase expenses. In late 2018 we formally created an intervention and retention program that helps loved pets remain in their home with assistance in medical treatment, supplies or training issues. We have seen a decrease in the number of owner surrenders in the past year which we can directly attribute to this program.

Talbot Humane is looked at as leader in our field in our community. Our executive director sits on 2 state level boards and is the president of Professional Animal Workers of Maryland, the state federation of animal control agencies and humane societies. We have grassroots outreach and advocacy in each town in our county and beyond our borders as well. We are members of local, state and national level organizations for nonprofits and field specific organizations. We work with other non-profits across the board in our community to advocate for the greater good of our community, state and nation.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The last 2 years has been challenging for most non-profits, and Talbot Humane is no different. In 2021 we witnessed changes in our community from housing issues, lack or resources for pet owners and employment struggles. One of the important parts of our mission is to keep animals with their loving owners. Over the past year we committed to increasing resources for our intervention and retention program. By doing so we have been able to help more pet owners in the community who are experiencing financial challenges keep their pets. This has been done by offering assistance with pet food, veterinary care, pet supplies and behavioral consultation. This program while helping pet owners has positively affected our operations at Talbot Humane as well. We have seen a 10% decrease in owner surrendered animals. This is also helping our organization reach another part of our mission- placing every treatable and adoptable pet into homes.
