We were not able to operate our social services inside and had to pivot to providing all operations outdoors.
St. Joseph Social Service Center received generous funding from new sources to sustain its food insecurity programs during a time of increased demand during the pandemic. These included NJ Pandemic Relief Fund, No Kid Hungry, and Northern New Jersey Community Foundation. We also continue to get increased distributions from NJ Food Bank.
While our Job Training program and clothing distribution were on hiatus to comply with social distancing orders, we offered limited mental health counseling and the following emergency programming: - Distributed bagged lunches outside at our center six days per week (Monday through Saturday), - Provided prescription medication assistance to registered clients to enable access to life sustaining medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, and other chronic medical conditions, - Dispensed emergency funds for rent and utilities to registered clients who are in danger of becoming homeless due to the sudden loss of a job or other hardships, and - Educated and informed our community members about access to public services/benefits.
Due to the pandemic, all services at St. Joseph’s Social Service Center were being provided outside to minimize transmission risk to our clients, volunteers, and staff. We aimed to provide quick service to keep the line moving—particularly in extreme weather conditions!—while maintaining social distancing. Updates to our cloud-based client database application greatly expedited services and supported public safety measures, both during the pandemic and into the future. SJSSC’s client database is a cloud-based application that allows us to track clients and what services they are receiving from our center. The main enhancement that we made was issuing our registered clients identification cards with a barcode that we can scan to record the services they are receiving. We also enhanced the system to enable us to communicate with clients via email, and to facilitate reporting for program management purposes.
We will continue to use the new client database system described above. Our organization also received a grant to purchase a large refrigerated container to allow for the increased and equitable distribution of fresh and healthy foods.

A meal provided to a person in need
Ratings are based on data the nonprofit itself collects on its work. We use the most recent year with sufficient data. Typically, this data allows us to calculate direct changes in participants' lives, such as increased income.
Outcome data collected during the program. The nonprofit submitted data on the amount of food it provides.
We don't know if the observed changes were caused by the nonprofit's program or something else happening at the same time (e.g., a participant got a raise). To determine causation, we take the outcomes we observe and subtract an estimate of the outcomes that would have happened even without the program (i.e., counterfactual outcomes).
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of the nonprofit’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
After estimating the program's outcomes, we need to determine how much it cost to achieve those outcomes. All monetary costs are counted, whether they are borne by a nonprofit service deliverer or by the nonprofit’s public and private partners.
