How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

We experienced an initial disruption in revenue from our catering and laundry businesses, but we created new revenue streams by providing food services for other local agencies.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Hope Haven remained fully operational during the pandemic; we continued admissions and are at capacity. This required many modifications to our programs: 1. We did not allow residents to leave campus beginning in March 2020, eliminating AA/NA meetings and sponsor visits. Staff provided extra programming on campus, and when NC moved into Phase 2.5, residents began attending some meetings when we could provide transportation (avoiding public transit).


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We invested in technology to accommodate virtual doctor’s visits, virtual court appearances, and virtual schooling for our children.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We enhanced facility infrastructure to provide a living environment that is safe, accessible, and comfortable for our residents. This was particularly helpful when schools moved to distance learning, and AA/NA meetings moved to a remote model during the Covid pandemic. We increased staff training and education to ensure that we are offering clinical best practices and an appropriate level of care for all residents.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Measurement and evaluation are key to successful program delivery. While we have measured quantitative outcomes well (number of people, nurse visits) limited staff and technology resources have kept us from measuring qualitative outcomes well. We have corrected this by: 1) hiring a Director of Data and Process Management to improve the quality of our outcome measures and use data analysis to improve programs 2) selecting an electronic medical record system (EMR) designed for mental health and substance abuse treatment. The program has a module for Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT): the practice of providing psychotherapy treatment that is informed by repeated administrations of patient-reported treatment outcomes. SAMHSA recognizes FIT as an evidence-based practice. Hope Haven’s greatest organizational challenge is the high turnover of staff in recent years. In the past two years, key leadership positions have changed: President/CEO, VP of Clinical Services, VP of Finance, and Director of Development. With a new team in place, we are seeking to bring stability to the front-line workers and build a new workplace culture of excellence and accountability. Hope Haven’s greatest external challenges are the growing opioid crisis in our community and the lack of affordable housing for post-program placement.
