How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

At the onset of COVID-19, the RMHC leadership team acted quickly and began moving families with high-acuity children into separate off-site housing where they could safely quarantine during the pandemic. RMHC then modified the Ronald McDonald House to allow families to safely move back in expending over $470,000 in unbudgeted COVID-19 expenses to include safe, separate off-site lodging, mini kitchens for the 72 on-site rooms, new personal protective equipment for staff, guests, home health care providers and other essential visitors and new sanitization services, products, supplies and equipment. The suspension of the volunteer program had a significant financial impact on the operations of the Ronald McDonald House. In an average year, more than 1,300 adopt‐a‐meal volunteer groups donate, prepare, and serve more than 77,000 meals to Ronald McDonald House families. However, in the wake of COVID-19, staff now prepare and deliver meals daily, resulting in an increase in food costs.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

The COVID-19 global pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the operation of Ronald McDonald House Charities. At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, RMHC quickly responded to the growing crisis by moving families to off-site emergency medical housing where they could safely quarantine while still having access to essential amenities including meal services, laundry facilities, transportation assistance, and personal care/hygiene items. Throughout the pandemic, the Ronald McDonald House program focused organizational resources to maintain best practices and precautionary standards that ensure the health and safety of families with highly immunocompromised children and longest lengths of stay. RMHC is currently serving approximately 50 families on-site and 25 families off-site. Ronald McDonald House Charities has vulnerable immunocompromised children staying at the Ronald McDonald House and therefore must take great precautions with introducing others to the community.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

RMHC’s highest priority is—and has always been—the health and safety of pediatric patient families. With this unprecedented challenge, Ronald McDonald House Charities was quick to adjust as necessary, and did so thoughtfully with the best interests of families in mind. For families of hospitalized children, the challenges of this pandemic have been especially poignant as they must navigate their child’s health status while maintaining precaution to avoid contagion. In Ronald McDonald House Charities’ mission to surround families with the support they need to be near and care for their seriously ill or injured children, the need to provide safe housing and supportive services for families of vulnerable pediatric patients is greater than ever before. Although modified, RMHC continues to provide emergency medical lodging and supportive services to the families of hospitalized children so that they can remain together and focus on the treatment and healing of their children.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

With this unprecedented challenge, we were inspired to adjust our most significant annual fundraising event by hosting a Virtual Spirit of Children Gala, while providing as much of a Gala experience as possible. Donations from this event help to support emergency lodging, food and transportation for pediatric patient families in need. Moving forward, we will continue to incorporate many of our virtual components into either modified hybrid events or added to our in-person events, when we can safely hold them. No one knows when things will return to normal, but when it does our ongoing mission to surround families with the support they need to be near and care for their seriously ill and injured children, will be needed more than ever. We are incredibly grateful for our donors who love our mission and make it possible!

RMHC has sustained organizational growth and measured mission impact through robust programs that deliver measurable outcomes. Ronald McDonald House: provides lodging to families who have an ill or injured child and must travel to Salt Lake City area hospitals for medical treatment. Ronald McDonald Family Rooms: are private respite spaces where parents can step away, rest and recharge while remaining just steps away from their child’s bedside. Ronald McDonald Hospitality Carts: are stocked with hygiene and comfort items, a selection of healthy snacks, family-centered activities, games and craft kits.

RMHC staff receives regular leadership coaching and hospitality professional development in order to provide needed support, empathy and kindness/love for a family experiencing a difficult time during their child’s care. Staff receives training on the Eleven Tenants of Companioning the Bereaved, self-care, meditation and wellness. Senior Management has received coaching sessions with Beth Strathum of Firebrand Consulting to help them achieve strategic goals by optimizing leadership talent, team talent, and employee productivity, all management level staff received a DISC assessment as well as group training sessions on Courageous Leadership by Brene Brown. All staff are invited to attend conferences, webinars and training that support their role. Our HR Director regularly researches and presents opportunities for staff and leadership development.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


RMHC’s highest priority is – and has always been – the health and safety of pediatric patient families. In March 2020, when the CDC and Utah’s local state, county and city governments issued public health orders, the Ronald McDonald House was filled with families who had very high acuity children in the trauma units, NICUs, PICUs, UNI, pre or post organ transplantation programs, or were undergoing cancer treatments. The RMHC leadership team responded quickly by creating the RMHC Emergency Medical Housing Relief Program to ensure that all families with children hospitalized in Salt Lake City continued to receive the services they needed despite the global pandemic. Families with high-acuity children were moved into separate off-site housing where they could safely quarantine during the pandemic. RMHC also created new community partnerships to ensure that families continued to receive critical supportive services such as free transportation to and from the hospital, meals, laundering, personal care/hygiene items, children’s activities, and virtual resources for both the parents and siblings of the hospitalized children. RMHC’s charitable mission is to keep families close when they need each other most. The RMHC leadership team has taken unprecedented steps to minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus while continuing to fulfill RMHC’s mission of creating a safe and supportive environment for families in crisis. Over the last year the RMHC staff has worked tirelessly to modify the Ronald McDonald House layout and procedures so that they adhere to public health and safety guidelines so that families can move back in. We developed a phased RMHC Program Reinstatement Plan to guide introducing families back on-site to RMHC programs. We will continue to provide both on- and offsite lodging, food, transportation, and amenities as we progress through the RMHC Program Reinstatement Plan. We are currently serving approximately 50 families on-site and 25 families off-site.
