Hebrew Free Loan of San Diego

To aid and empower members of the San Diego Jewish community* to help themselves by providing affordable interest-free loans in accordance with core Jewish values of dignity, respect, compassion, and confidentiality. *Jewish community includes households with at least one self-identifying Jewish person and others who are employed by local Jewish communal organizations.

The HFLSD vision is to be a perpetual source of funding for members of the San Diego Jewish Communit

Goal One: As HFLSD is a new nonprofit, our first goal is to focus on our core programs and raise awareness that we are a viable source for people in need in the San Diego Jewish community.

Goal Two: As we grow and the loan portfolio increases, HFLSD will need to maintain an ability to provide service to all of our potential loan recipients, by increasing our staff needs.

Goal Three: HFLSD focuses on building and maintaining relationships with other nonprofits to become a source of referral as well as refer loan recipients to other sources for help.

We had key members of the organization attend the International Association of Jewish Free Loans national 2-day conference. We also attend professional development courses, that include board development and fundraising expertise. We will be holding annual Strategic Planning Meetings.

HFLSD has reached out to over 160 other nonprofits in the San Diego community to share our mission and attempt to create ways to collaborate. We have MOUs with 2 other Jewish nonprofits to assist clients. We also participate in networking calls on a regular basis.

HFLSD is a new nonprofit that started in October, 2020. We created processes and protocols to begin our loan process, but are continually changing and adapting as we learn more about our community. An example of this is that our loan programs require guarantors, but we developed a San Diego COVID-19 Emergency Fund to help those affected by COVID that could not secure their own guarantors. This fund acts as a guarantor for loan recipients in need. HFLSD has also created Employer Guarantor Programs, where the employer acts as a guarantor for any of their employees. HFLSD continues to develop and create ways to assist the San Diego Jewish community with interest-free loans to help loan recipients reach their financial dreams.
