Mission

Access to knowledge is a fundamental human right. The Wikimedia Endowment is our enduring commitment to a world of freely shared knowledge, now and in perpetuity. We believe that knowledge is a foundation. It is a foundation for human potential, a foundation for freedom, a foundation for opportunity. Wikipedia is the world’s largest free knowledge ecosystem — a public trust for the common good — built by people, for people.

Vision

Building up the Wikimedia Endowment is the single best way to protect Wikipedia for future generations.

Goals

1.We’ve made a series of recent investments designed to improve the financial and management capabilities of the Wikimedia Endowment -- including in 2024, when we appointed two people to the Wikimedia Endowment Board: Laura Duchâtelet, a strong advocate of Wikimedia’s knowledge equity mission, and Mayree Clark, a finance expert who’s a former director of the Stanford University Endowment.
2.The Endowment should help Wikipedia remain relevant and thrive in a world of rapid technological innovation. It’s also critical we support Wikimedia project editors. That’s why we recently funded four technology-oriented projects (see https://wikimediaendowment.org/annualreports/2022-2023-annual-report/#undefined-1712315582973) -- and why we’ll continue funding the projects’ technological needs.
