Hurricane Sandy

*** Warning: We have become aware of an alleged charity called the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation that is soliciting donations. As reported on 2/12/13 in the Asbury Park Press, "a state investigation is under way into the financial dealings of [Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation] that has raised $1 million while misleading donors." For more information, please see our Donor Advisory.***

Before you contribute to Hurricane Relief and Recovery efforts, please read our Tips For Giving In Times of Crisis. Then, you may want to consider a donation to one of the following highly-rated charities that are responding.

But as this list grows, be sure to first consider the nature of the charity's work. That is to say, not every charity is responding in the same way to Hurricane Sandy. Some are providing temporary shelter while others are providing food, water and medical assistance. Other charities are focused on long term rebuilding efforts. And some are simply fundraising on behalf of other charities. Think about what it is you want your donation to accomplish and then make sure you select the charity that is doing that type of work. The links below take you to each charity's ratings page where you can see how we've evaluated their Financial Health and Accountability & Transparency. Also on that page, we link to the charity's website where you can learn more specifically about the type of assistance the charity is providing in relation to Hurricane Sandy. And make sure you can find evidence of a response by the charity and not just the charity stating that it is preparing for a response (standing at the ready) in case its help is needed.

Why isn't Salvation Army listed here? Because this list is only for charities that are highly-rated by Charity Navigator. Since we are unable to rate the Salvation Army, it isn't included in this list. Please visit our FAQs for an explanation as to why we do not rate the Salvation Army.

We will update this list as we become aware of more charities helping post Hurricane Sandy.
