What If We Had a Page on our Website for Every US Registered Nonprofit?

November 2012

Dear Friends of Charity Navigator,

That’s exactly what we plan to do!  By this time next year, we expect to have a page of information available for you on every nonprofit listed in the IRS Exempt Business Master File regardless of whether or not Charity Navigator rates them.  That’s over 1.5 million organizations that provide services both in the US and throughout the world!  In addition to basic information (charity name, address, contact information, cause area and mission), we will let you know if and why a charity does not meet our rating criteria, give you tools for rating it yourself, provide a “vote now” button to move it up in the rating queue if it does meet criteria and supply you with the “Write a Review” feature that is already on our web site for rated charities.

Our #1 priority is to make sure that you, our valued users and supporters, are as fully equipped as possible to make the charitable giving/social investing decisions that are vitally important to you and to those organizations seeking to make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of people and communities of they serve.

Given our continuing work on the development and implementation of CN 3.0 (adding the
all-important third dimension—results reporting—to CN 2.0) and getting to 10,000 rated charities, all by the end of 2016, many people have asked us why we are taking on this additional herculean task and how we are going to accomplish it.

The answer to both questions is YOU!  Charity Navigator’s core values call for a fully client-centered approach wherein concern for the users of our website is at the heart of everything we create and critical decisions that we make.  So, we are doing this for you and, at the same time, need your help to get it done.

I’d like to give you a progress report on where we are with all three of our major initiatives.  They are included Charity Navigator’s Business Plan, which was unanimously approved by the Board on June 20, 2012.

  1. A Page for Every Nonprofit  -  The first prototype is already in development and testing on it will begin early next year.
  2. CN 3.0  - We are about to ship out the final CN 3.0 rating prototype to our Advisory Panel and other experts in the field for their feedback.  When everyone has weighed in, we will begin gathering the results reporting data for the pilot cause area—family and children’s services.  As we continue to gather the information, one cause area at  a time, we will display the information on a separate tab on the individual charity rating pages, just as we did for the accountability and transparency data.  The first CN 3.0 data will be displayed no later than Spring 2013.
  3. Getting to 10,000 Rated Charities – Our goal is to get to 6,000 charity ratings by the end of 2012.  Today, with just over 5,800 charity ratings on the CN website, we expect to handily achieve our goal.  Ultimately, 10,000 charities rated in 3 dimensions (CN 3.0) will be featured by the end of 2016.

Your support of our work is most deeply appreciated and plays such a major role in what we have been able to accomplish thus far.  Because the key to achieving our goals going forward is the addition of resources (staff and other critical infrastructure), your partnership and investment is vital to the success of our efforts as we work diligently to add significant value to the charitable giving landscape.  I thank you in advance for helping us to enhance and increase the tools to optimize the return for millions of your fellow social investors and making the world a much better place!

All the best,

Ken Berger
President and CEO

Did You Know We Are a Charity, Too?

If even a third of the 7 million people who visited our site last year had donated a dollar to Charity Navigator, we would comfortably meet our annual budget and be able to do what so many of you ask us to do every day--rate more charities!

With the support of users like you, we are currently investing in staff and technology. This will allow us to improve the search and organizational features of our site, making it easier to find the information that matters most to you. We will also continue to enhance our evaluation system and metrics.

So, whether you're a first time visitor or a long time user, we ask for your help in achieving our goal. Your gift of any size is most deeply appreciated! Thank You!

With the support of users like you, we are making it easier to find the info that matters most. Thank you!
