Why have you now provided a complete star rating of Charity Navigator?
Charity Navigator transitioned from a private foundation to a public 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2012. Prior to the filing of our FYE 6/2019 IRS Form 990, we did not meet the eligibility criteria to be rated (seven filings of the IRS Form 990). As such, we could not issue a rating previously.
With a strong commitment to accountability and transparency, we have made our financial documents and governance policies publically available on our website since 2006.
How did Charity Navigator evaluate itself for this rating?
Charity Navigator used the same process and methodology used for all charity evaluations: we ingested/collected all of the necessary data from the IRS Form 990 and website, input it into our system, and rendered an unbiased rating on a scale of zero to four.
Our standard methodology can be found here. With this level of transparency, all of our ratings can be verified.
What external validation has taken place to ensure the rating is unbiased?
The independent audit firm Dorfman Abrams Music LLC carefully examined our accounting records. This firm then filed our Form 990 with the IRS and completed our Audited Financial Statements. We make all of our financials available on our website for full transparency. Additionally, Charity Navigator is proud to be a BBB Giving Wise Alliance accredited charity, meeting all 20 Standards For Charity Accountability.
