Hurricane Matthew

October 4, 2016

Hurricane Matthew Header Image

On October 4, 2016, Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Haiti as a category 4. Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, is still struggling to rebuild after a devastating earthquake in 2010 and the subsequent cholera epidemic. The wind, rain and storm surge is expected to cause significant damage to the impoverished country where tens of thousands of people live in flimsy shacks. In advance of the storm, Haitian officials were moving people into the country’s 1,300 emergency shelters. The storm is expected to continue onto Cuba, the Bahamas and possibly the United States.

If you want to help, then consider supporting one of the charities listed here. You can click on the charity's name to go to its Charity Navigator rating page where you can review its financial health, accountability and transparency. On that page, you can quickly make a donation by clicking on the green “Donate to this Charity” button.

But before you give in response to this, or to the next natural disaster, be sure to review our Tips For Giving In Times Of Crisis.
