February is a great time to show your favorite charities some love by making an extra contribution or volunteering your time and talent.
Charities often see a slump in donor and volunteer engagement in the months right after the holidays. And this year, perhaps more than ever before, your charity may be in need a little TLC. Check out our tips for showing a charity some love this month.
Find a charity that matches your passion. As you consider which charities to support, remember that there are roughly one million of them. That means you don’t have to settle for an organization that isn’t a perfect match for your beliefs and goals. Take the time to discover an organization that offers the programs and services that match your charitable interests.
Feel good about your gift. Giving feels good and smart giving feels better. Before you give, take a look at the charity’s rating to see how they measure in terms of their financial health and accountability and transparency practices.
Give with no strings attached. Make an unrestricted gift so the charity has the flexibility to respond to changing demands for its services and to spend the money where it is most needed to continue their day-to-day good work.
Show the love over and over. Most charities receive the majority of their funding in November and December when giving is top-of-mind for donors, but charities need funding all year long. Monthly gifts are a great way to provide your favorite charity with a steady source of income throughout the year. If your favorite charity doesn’t currently have a monthly giving program, you can set up your own recurring gift by using our Giving Basket.
Perhaps you’d prefer to show your favorite organization some love through volunteering your time and talent. That’s great, too! Get in touch with the charity beforehand to figure out what needs they have and where you can help. And, don’t forget to check out our Guide to Volunteering.
