Over the last two decades, the suicide rate in the United States has sharply increased, making it the 10th leading cause of death in our country according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Suicide now claims more lives than automobile accidents each year, and some leaders in the mental health field believe that our deteriorating mental health care system is partially to blame.

At Charity Navigator, we believe we have a responsibility to elevate the voices of effective organizations that are advocating for and providing support and education to individuals and families that have been affected by suicide.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to share stories and resources and shed light on this highly-stigmatized topic. In honor of this important month, Charity Navigator is spotlighting a number of highly-rated organizations that are recognized as leaders in the field of suicide prevention, ranging from support to education to advocacy.

We hope you will consider supporting one of these outstanding organizations today as they walk alongside those who are currently struggling and strive to bring awareness to this important issue.
