Program Name: TimeOut@UCLA
Problem

40 % of caregivers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are diagnosed with depression. in 2011, caregivers for AD and dementia had additional health costs totally $8.7 billion. AD patients in the early to moderate stage require a caregiver at all times, often family. In addition, patients themselves often lack mental stimulation. Mental activity has been shown to slow rate of cognitive decline. Finally, geriatric care is in high demand with less than half the needed geriatricians currently in practice.

Strategy

TimeOut@UCLA trains college students to interact with Alzheimer's patients. The program connects students with Alzheimer's patients and provides them with various activities to complete or the ability to simply converse about each other's lives. The program also allows caregivers to drop their senior off (or provides transportation to the venue) to give the caregiver 3-6 hours of respite time per week.

IF:THEN

IF IF caregivers are given adequate respite time...

THEN THEN we can help alleviate some of the stress of being a caregiver and reduce risk of depression

IF IF early and mid-stage Alzheimer's disease patients have the opportunity to engage with college-age students for several hours per week...

THEN THEN their mood and mental health will improve and slow their rate of cognitive decline.

IF IF college students are provided opportunities to interact with early-stage Alzheimer's patients who have spent their life in careers that students are interested in...

THEN THEN they can receive career advice and are exposed to geriatric care during an important development stage of their education.
