Program Name: Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC)
Problem

The U.S. government detains approximately 400,000 immigrants each year in a network of 250 jails and private prisons. Immigration detention is technically a civil form of confinement, and thus, immigrants in detention lack many of the safeguards of the criminal justice system. They have no right to a court-appointed attorney, call, or a speedy trial. 46% of immigrants are transferred away from family and friends, and 84% lack attorneys. Many go without any form of visitation.

Strategy

CIVIC's 42 immigration detention visitation program and its national hotline (that provides people in immigration detention with a free phone call to our community support) act as windows into an otherwise secretive system. These windows allow CIVIC to document and expose human rights abuses and launch award-winning storytelling projects.

IF:THEN

IF enough people in the United States are visiting detention facilities and working alongside people in detention to shine a light on the abuses that occur in U.S. immigration detention...

THEN we will be able to show the government that our tax dollars are being used to perpetrate human and civil rights abuses against migrants on American soil.

IF Congress understands that their alternatives to detention, such as hospitality programs many of our community volunteers run, that are less costly and more humane...

THEN Congress will defund immigration detention, and instead use taxpayer dollars to fund alternatives to detention.
