Founded in 1983, The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) addresses the issues of hunger and homelessness on Long Island by providing food, shelter and long-term housing and supportive services in a dignified and respectful manner for those who seek our help. We are a volunteer-based organization with a dedicated staff, a broad base of community support and a commitment to educate the public about these issues. Anyone who comes to The INN's soup kitchens receives a hot, nutritious meal, a warm welcome and access to whatever additional support services are available. The INN operates the Mary Brennan INN, the largest soup kitchen on Long Island. Approximately 62,400 meals are served annually. The INN also operates two Emergency Shelters, a Long-Term Housing program and the Center for Transformative Change, a unique resource center and clothing boutique, providing a variety of essential services to those in need in Long Island communities.

Impact & Results Score

Program Name: Soup Kitchen

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
Interfaith Nutrition Network prepares and serves meals to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$20 provides a meal to a person in need.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a score of 75 if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of The INN.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. Interfaith Nutrition Network publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of Interfaith Nutrition Network’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
