Program Name: Caregiver with Microfund for Women
Problem

Research shows that healthcare costs exert the most financial pressure on poor families. The poor are less likely to seek treatment early in an illness for fear of losing income by taking time away from their families or work. As primary caregivers for their families, many Jordanian women have a unique and pressing need for appropriate means to manage health-related risk. Meeting the costs of an unexpected health emergency is the most common reason women give for having to liquidate businesses.

Strategy

To gain a deep understanding of Jordanian women’s health insurance needs, Women’s World Banking and partner Microfund for Women began with extensive research, including focus groups. Findings informed the product design: an affordable, meaningful hospital cash benefit, which includes maternity coverage—a high priority for Jordanian women. Finally, a communications plan was adapted to the women's level of literacy in order to increase understanding and appropriate utilization of the product.

IF:THEN

IF low-income women in Jordan are offered a no-exclusions, low-cost hospital cash microinsurance benefit, which is automatically linked to their loan product, which covers all hospital stays, including those related to pregnancy, a feature critical to improving maternal health outcomes…...

THEN Jordanian women, who are more likely to prioritize the care of their family above their own, will be more likely to access health care and receive a cash benefit to use for a range of related needs, including transportation to the hospital or replacement of lost revenue while their businesses were closed.
