The mission of Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is to create a future without breast cancer by focusing on cause and prevention. We will meet this challenge by being fast, flexible, and project-based. We will identify needs and determine how these needs can be quickly met, not by emulating existing nonprofit organizations, but by designing a new model specific to the tasks at hand. We will find the most effective route to breast cancer eradication, whether it is in the not-for-profit arena, the for-profit arena, or both. We will approach problems by collaborating and coordinating with other organizations. We will facilitate solutions to be adopted by others.

Impact Information

Classy created Progress to help nonprofits and social enterprises articulate their performance by combining qualitative insights on program strategies and beneficiaries, with quantitative metrics on social problems, short term outputs and long term intended outcomes.  Learn More about Impact Information.
Program Name: Research Ambassadors for Community Health (ReACH): A Diversity Initiative of the Army of Women
Problem

Each year, over 40,000 women will die of breast cancer in the USA. White women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than are African American women, but African American women are 42% more likely to die of the disease. Asian, Latina, and Native American women have a lower risk than white women of developing breast cancer, but there is a lingering stigma associated with cancer within Hispanic and Latino groups to prevent them from seeking care & enrolling in clinical research.

Strategy

We work with local community advocates to break down access barriers to care and recruit underserved populations to increase more diverse population participation within the Army of Women to recruit and enroll in studies nationally. Our community advocates serve as our ReACH Community Ambassadors to infiltrate their respective minority communities. Many times, due to access barriers and lack of resources, patients are unaware of available clinical trials that could potentially save their lives.

IF:THEN

IF We could enroll more women representing ethnic and cultural minorities in breast cancer clinical research nationally and increase their access to healthcare...

THEN we will have answers to specific questions related to certain racial groups and we will develop targeted treatments and improve access to healthcare for these specific populations who are often socially and economically disadvantaged.

IF We could enroll more women representing ethnic and cultural minorities in the Army of Women...

THEN more minorities will be available for national clinical trial recruitment.
