2010-12 02/01/2014 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Saturday, February 1, 2014

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for Several Sources Shelters in July 2014 because the charity filed its 2011 and 2012 Forms 990.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this  charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • Charities are required to file the Form 990 (annual tax return) with the IRS annually.  A 501(c) 3 public charity must file their Form 990 by the 15th day of the 5th month after the organization's accounting period ends.  An organization can request a three month extension, which is granted automatically, upon filing Form 8868 with the IRS.  An organization can file for another three month extension, but it will be reviewed and the application must show reasonable cause for the additional time required.  For more on this please page 6 of the IRS Form 990 instructions.
  • Charity Navigator receives the Form 990 for all charities we rate on a monthly basis directly from the IRS.  The last Form 990 for this charity we received was for the 2010 tax year.  We have reached out to Several Sources Shelters to obtain a more recent Form 990, but we have either not received a reply or if we did receive a reply it was an inadequate explanation as to why it hasn't filed a more recent return with the IRS. We are therefore unable to evaluate Several Sources Shelters and thus have issued this donor advisory
  • The charity has provided the following response: "It has come to the attention of the Several Sources Shelters, Inc. that a donor advisory was issued on Charity Navigator web site due to noncompliance of filing tax form 990 for 2011 and 2012. Several Sources Shelters, Inc. is making every effort to complete and file the delinquent tax returns for both years but has been faced with many challenging circumstances that has prevented the filing to date. The primary setbacks happen during 2011 while our area was hit with hurricane Sandy and the entire geographic region lost many work days due to power outages and recovery efforts. The storm only augmented an additional setback in 2011 by strictly confidential circumstances. These developments required extra management time from Senior team including the Several Sources Executive Vice President who is also responsible for the majority of the financial reporting. We are pleased to advise Charity Navigator that we are now confident that we will have these tax returns for 2011 and 2012 ready in the very near future but still need a little bit of time to complete them. Although the last two tax returns have not been filed yet, the organization has been operating as usual and fulfilling its mission statement on behalf of the surrounding community since 1981 and has had an excellent track record in recent years in complying with all of its tax filings. Furthermore, although we have not completed our audits in full to date we have not discovered any financial concerns during our recent audit procedures."
