The mission of the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) is to develop effective therapeutics that stop ALS as soon as possible. Focused on meeting this urgent unmet medical need, ALS TDI executes a robust discovery program, as well as a multi-pronged approach to validate potential therapeutics; including small molecules, protein biologics, gene therapies and cell-based constructs. The Institute's unique, industrial-scale platform allows for the development and testing of dozens of potential therapeutics each year.

Impact Information

data icon Classy created Progress to help nonprofits and social enterprises articulate their performance by combining qualitative insights on program strategies and beneficiaries, with quantitative metrics on social problems, short term outputs and long term intended outcomes.
Program Name: Precision Medicine Program
Problem

We need treatments for ALS already! Your ALS experience is unique and for the first time, researchers acknowledge that ALS is a complex disease with many different subtypes. Only by listening to people with ALS, collecting unbiased data about your past and your progression today can we classify the subtypes of ALS and screen and target treatments more precisely. Only with your participation in PMP can we accomplish this goal.

Strategy

We share the data in real time with patients enrolled in the PMP, see how this works online here: https://www.als.net/precision-medicine/ (click learn more in the "what do you get?" section). We are seeking better clinical outcome measures in partnership with leaders in analyzing data to find these such as Denali Therapeutics and Google. See more information about this in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp-6uyMO4Oc&t=264s and this press release: http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfran.

IF:THEN

IF If we can determine the various subtypes of ALS...

THEN Then we will be able to develop personalized/precision medicines for them

IF If we can determine better ways to track disease progression...

THEN Then we will be able to reduce the time it takes (right now more than 12 months) and the number of people it takes (right now ~450) to run a clinical trial determining if a drug works in ALS or not.

IF If we share more information about a person's disease progression with them...

THEN Then they will be able to better collaborate with their doctors or others on interim medical care as their disease progresses
