Impact Information

Program Name: Small Water Enterprises for Scale and Sustainability
Problem

Water is a prerequisite to all human progress, and critical to the well-being of people, communities, and countries. Yet despite decades of work and billions of dollars invested, at any given time 30 - 50% of water systems are non-functional. An estimated 1.8 billion people lack dependable access to safe, affordable water. This results in a vicious cycle of child mortality, illness and suffering, loss of income and economic opportunity, and is an immense burden for women and girls particularly.

Strategy

Our strategy has four components, implemented in parallel: 1) partner with 400 communities and local entrepreneurs to develop and operate small water enterprises (safe water stations); 2) develop the evidence base for the operational, financial, & consumer effectiveness of SWEs; 3) engage with sector stakeholders and disseminate results of component 2; and 4) improve the enabling environment at national level for strengthened policies, financing, and well-capacitated implementing organizations.

IF:THEN

IF we demonstrate that it is possible for locally owned small water enterprises to serve communities living on $2/day with safe, affordable convenient water, in ways that are financially and operationally self-sustaining such that they endure over time and avoid the high failure rates that plague the sector, and this approach can be replicated at a credible scale...

THEN we can build the tools and evidence-base to convince governments, donor agencies, and other NGOs that small water enterprises are a critical pathway for achieving SDG 6 (universal safe water coverage), which will unlock large scale infrastructure investment capital to be deployed for small water enterprises. The end result will be hundreds of millions of people gaining enduring, dependable, convenient access to safe water, and living healthier and more productive lives, especially girls.
