For 32 years, The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries (SSKP) has provided food and fellowship to residents in need along the Connecticut shoreline by providing hot meals and groceries. We serve the towns of Essex, Chester, Clinton, Madison, Old Saybrook, East Lyme, Lyme, Old Lyme, Killingworth, Westbrook & Deep River. During the pandemic, residents may attend one of our five pantries each week, with a variety of pre-bagged food delivered curbside for safety reasons. In 2020 we shared 1.6 million lbs. of food and served 159,555 people - a 60% increase. Each household receives a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, bread and cereals, dairy and non-perishable foods such as canned meats, canned and dried beans and canned and boxed meals.
Of our 9 meal sites, 7 are operating with curbside "grab-and-go" meals for all who come. All of SSKP's sites are located in faith communities, and we employ only a small staff, operating with the assistance of hundreds of caring volunteers.

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries primarily provides groceries to beneficiaries. It also prepares and serves meals to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$0.80 provides a meal to a person in need.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a score of 75 if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
