Founded in 1981, Wellspring House empowers individuals and families to live more secure lives through basic needs assistance, education and job training. Our basic needs assistance program provides emergency shelter for families, housing search assistance for families living in motels, emergency homeless prevention funding and guidance, assistance for recently homeless families, permanent homes for 11 low-income people at our lodging house, and advocacy for affordable housing and issues related to homelessness. Wellspring House also offers education and job training opportunities through curriculums that are designed to make sure that adult students can access information in different learning styles, and respectful of the adult learner.

Impact Information

This charity has reported a measure of cost-effectiveness: how much impact (per dollar) your donation will have on the charity's social outcome. The cost-effectiveness calculation was performed using protocols developed by ImpactMatters, an independent auditor of philanthropic impact.

For nonprofits that run multiple programs, we highlight the impact of one program below.  Learn More about Impact Information.
Program Name: Wellspring House
Program Activities
Wellspring House provides people experiencing homelessness with a temporary place to stay.
Impact Statement
$430 provides a night of shelter for a person experiencing homelessness.
Impact Assessment
3/5
Assessment Benchmark
Impact assessments of emergency shelters are based on the cost of providing a night of shelter relative to the Fair Market Rent in that county. Programs receive a 5/5 assessment if they are less than 200% the cost of a meal and a 4/5 assessment if they are less than 400%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a 3/5 assessment.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of Wellspring House.
Data Source
We look for self-reported shelter nights. If we cannot find this information we estimate it using HIC data.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the provision of shelter by one nonprofit does not diminish the provision of shelter by any other (neighboring) nonprofit. We also assume there is, in general, no slack capacity in the homeless shelter system. In the absence of a given shelter, beneficiaries would not be able to stay at another shelter because other shelters are assumed to have no beds to spare. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
