Bridges to Prosperity provides isolated communities with access to essential health care, education and economic opportunities by building footbridges over impassable rivers. We develop and share engineering solutions that are safe, replicable, and locally viable. We provide educational programs that teach footbridge construction to reach the greatest number of people in need. We provide opportunities for leadership development and personal growth through international collaboration. We measure our success by the long lasting impact our training and bridge projects have on the reduction of rural poverty due to isolation.

Impact Information

Classy created Progress to help nonprofits and social enterprises articulate their performance by combining qualitative insights on program strategies and beneficiaries, with quantitative metrics on social problems, short term outputs and long term intended outcomes.  Learn More about Impact Information.
Program Name: Bridges to Prosperity
Problem

In the remote farmlands of the developing world, walking is the primary mode of movement. When rivers swell, walks to school or work, or visits to a doctor can become life threatening. The World Bank estimates that one billion people lack year-round access to adequate transportation infrastructure, often due the lack of local technical expertise and resources to build and maintain reliable public works projects.

Strategy

B2P works closely with local governments to identify communities where there is high potential for impact, and high capacity for local investment. B2P strengthens the capacity of local communities by engaging and empowering members throughout the site selection and bridge building process, and preparing local stakeholders for long-term maintenance. This strategy leads to high project impact, in terms of the number of people with safe access to essential services, and high project success rates.

IF:THEN

IF communities in the developing world have reliable, all-weather transportation infrastructure including roads and bridges...

THEN they will have increased access to essential education, healthcare, and employment opportunities that will allow residents to care for themselves and their families.

IF footbridges are included in rural transportation infrastructure planning and implementation...

THEN communities situated near large or seasonally flooding rivers will have safe and reliable access to vital resources.
