This rating was published 09/03/2019 and includes data from FY2018, the most recent 990 received at that time.

Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes was organized in 1982 by several downtown churches concerned about increasing requests from people for food assistance. The congregations joined together to share resources and create an organized response to local hunger and formed Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes. Over the years, the number of congregations involved increased and food distribution sites expanded. Although the Grocery Pantry Program is still the largest of KLF's programs, we work with others to provide prepared meal support, senior commodity programs, agency food support, food packs for children, and other community food programs. KLF is the largest charitable food distribution system in Kalamazoo County. We work hard to promote a hunger-free community through programs and advocacy work.

Impact Information

This charity has reported a measure of cost-effectiveness: how much impact (per dollar) your donation will have on the charity's social outcome. The cost-effectiveness calculation was performed using protocols developed by ImpactMatters, an independent auditor of philanthropic impact.

For nonprofits that run multiple programs, we highlight the impact of one program below.  Learn More about Impact Information.
Program Name: Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes
Program Activities
Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes primarily collects, warehouses and distributes food to front-line organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens. It also manages smaller programs that provide groceries directly to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$0.80 provides a meal to a person in need.
Impact Assessment
5/5
Assessment Benchmark
Impact assessments of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive a 5/5 assessment if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a 4/5 assessment if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a 3/5 assessment.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
