Give an Hour's mission is to develop national networks of volunteers capable of responding to both acute and chronic conditions that arise within our society. By harnessing the skill and expertise of volunteer professionals, we are able to increase the likelihood that those in need receive the support and care they deserve. Since 2005 we have focused on providing free mental health care to active duty, National Guard and Reserve service members, veterans, and their families. In 2016, we began expanding our efforts to address the mental health needs of other populations.

Program Name: The Campaign to Change Direction
Problem

America is at a crossroads when it comes to how our society addresses mental health. One in five of our citizens has a diagnosable mental health condition, and more Americans are expected to die this year by suicide than in car accidents. Many of us are comfortable acknowledging our physical suffering, for which we almost always seek help, many more of us privately experience mental suffering, for which we often do not seek help. The Campaign to Change Direction seeks to change this culture.

Strategy

The Campaign to Change Direction leverages partner networks to achieve its goal of encouraging everyone to pay attention to his/her emotional well-being. Having created a common language (the Five Signs), we are harnessing our partners—which have access to hundreds of thousands of people through their networks and distribution channels—to reach all Americans. Our partners are thus part of the workforce implementing this change and part of the broader population that is our target.

IF:THEN

IF we encourage all Americans to pay attention to their mental well-being the way they do their physical well-being, which would mean that just as people go to the gym, their dentist, or their doctor, it would become natural for people to engage in similar activities that are good for their mental well-being,...

THEN people would identify challenges and the development of mental health conditions early on, would be more comfortable talking openly with family and friends, and would seek care when they needed it. They would be more likely to remain in treatment, issues would become more well known and understood, and mental health conditions would garner more funds and become the subject of more research.

IF we create a common language and everyone learns five key signs of emotional suffering—which are personality change, agitation, withdrawal, poor self-care, hopelessness—just as everyone knows the signs of a heart attack,...

THEN we would recognize suffering and have a shared way of talking about pain. The signs are not about diagnosing; rather they are a matter of recognizing the human condition, being compassionate, and caring for one another. Such a shared recognition would take fear, guilt, and shame out of equation and result in more people seeking and getting support.

IF we believe that changing the culture includes and requires increasing access to care for underserved and at-risk populations, and if we take the successful model of Give an Hour (which harnesses the skills and generosity of mental health professionals and directs them to respond to the needs of the military and veteran community for free mental health care),...

THEN we will be able to continue that work and expand those services, and Give an Hour's reach, to help those in need regardless of their ability to pay and access to traditional health care. As a result, more of those in need will receive the care and support they deserve.

IF we create a collective impact effort that brings together organizations, corporations, communities, and individuals across the country—including all sectors of business, nonprofits, government, entertainment, and education—and if we harness the strengths and commitment of these partners,...

THEN we will have the tools, partners, and distribution channels to ensure that our message about mental health being part of the human condition will penetrate throughout our culture. We will thus be able to engage, inspire, and change our citizens and our culture.
