Camp Kesem National's mission is supporting children through and beyond a parent's cancer. Our vision is to ensure that every child impacted by a parent's cancer is never alone. Camp Kesem National is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent's cancer. Camp Kesem operates free summer camps for children who have been impacted by a parent's cancer. With over 5 million children impacted by a parent's cancer, Camp Kesem must continue expanding to meet this need. Camp Kesem is the largest national organization dedicated to this unique population, and for many children their Camp Kesem experience is a life-changing event–providing them a community of children with similar experiences, and a safe and welcoming environment to have fun and rediscover their childhood.

Program Name: Camp Kesem
Problem

When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family is affected. For children whose parents have this horrible disease, the joys of childhood are replaced with a new reality of cancer vocabulary, treatments and fears. Because they are neither physically ill nor visibly distinct from other children, these children are often quietly suffering, leading to feelings of isolation, low self-esteem and depression.

Strategy

Kesem's student run summer camps give children the opportunity to just be kids. Healing is part of the Camp Kesem experience that sets us apart from typical summer camps facilitated by: Cabin Chat: nightly facilitated peer discussions, offering children a safe environment to open up and draw strength from the realization that they are not alone. Empowerment Ceremony: a powerful opportunity for children to share their personal story, and results in a special bond between everyone at camp.

IF:THEN

IF we can provide support children through and beyond a parent’s cancer with innovative, fun-filled programs...

THEN children will befriend peers who can relate to their unique situation, and gain the strategies and confidence needed to cope with their parent’s illness or death within a supportive, lifelong community that recognizes and understands their unique needs.

IF we can empower college students, driven by a personal family connection to cancer, or simply motivated to dedicate themselves to giving back to the greater community...

THEN Working with the Camp Kesem national model, student leaders develop organizational, programming, fundraising, marketing, staffing and financial skills as they commit to making a difference by developing and managing every aspect of their camp and building invaluable leadership skills
