The Nyaka Aids Orphans Project educates, empowers, and transforms vulnerable and impoverished communities in Uganda, ensuring that everyone has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive. We envision a world where all vulnerable and underserved communities have the knowledge, resources, and opportunities they need to grow and prosper. At the Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project, we believe we are all one family created by God, born equally, with the duty to help one another. We believe all human beings have the right to education, food, shelter, basic health care, respect, and love.

Program Name: Education Program
Problem

There are 1.1 million children in Uganda who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Many of HIV/AIDS orphans live with their grandmothers who cannot afford to send them to school. Nyaka knows of 43,000 HIV/AIDS orphans in southwest Uganda and provides 768 of these children education through two primary schools, a vocational secondary school, and scholarships to attend schools in Uganda. Nyaka provides free education, healthcare, meals, and clean water to students in nursery class through university.

Strategy

Nyaka's Education Program is based on a holistic, human rights based approach to poverty. We believe that providing the five basic human rights (shelter, safety, education, nutrition, and healthcare) will create an environment in which children are best able to learn and succeed. Shelter is provided through grandmothers with case management support from Nyaka; safety through awareness and sexual assault support; education and nutrition through the schools; and healthcare through medical clinics.

IF:THEN

IF HIV/AIDS orphans are able to attend school without any costs, including textbooks, school uniforms and shoes, school supplies, or any school fees...

THEN they will be able to begin school at the appropriate age, stay in school consistently, and be able to focus on their studies. They will be more likely to pass their grade and graduate.

IF HIV/AIDS orphans are given proper nutrition and access to healthcare including vaccines, medicine, and preventative measures...

THEN they will develop properly and be able to stay awake in class to retain information and receive good grades. Their risk of contracting HIV/AIDS will decrease and they will live longer, happier lives and be able to attend school uninterrupted.

IF HIV/AIDS orphans successfully graduate from a certificate program, a vocational program, or university...

THEN they will be more likely to earn a good income, wait longer to get married and have children, and have fewer children. They will be much more likely to escape the cycle of poverty and will be better able to support their grandmothers as they age.
