Founded in 1970, Africare, a leader among organizations assisting Africa, has more projects on the continent than any other U.S.-based charity. Africare works to improve the quality of life for the people of Africa. Our programs address needs in four principal areas: health and HIV/AIDS, food security and agriculture, water and sanitation, and emergency and humanitarian assistance. Africare places communities at the center of development in the belief that only through strong communities can Africa feed itself, develop and manage its natural resources, provide adequate education and vocational training, address people's needs for health care and disease prevention, achieve economic well-being and live in peace. Since its founding, Africare has delivered well over $800 million in assistance - over 2,500 projects - to 36 countries Africa-wide.

Impact & Results Score

Score
100/100
Program Name: Mwanzo Bora Nutrition Program
Program Name: Mwanzo Bora Nutrition Program

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
The Mwanzo Bora Nutrition Program promoted healthy behaviors like exclusive breastfeeding for infants and eating a diversified diet via multimedia channels, community events, community health workers and peer support groups.
Impact Statement
$320 prevents one child from being stunted due to chronic undernutrition
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of community health programs are based on the cost of a disability-adjusted life year (DALY) averted relative to the G.D.P. per capita of the country in which the program operates. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they avert a DALY for less than than the G.D.P. per capita, and a score of 75 if they avert a DALY for less than three times G.D.P. per capita. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
Using data reported by Africare, ImpactMatters analysts calculated impact.
Data Source
Outcome data collected through the nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys, which showed the prevalence of stunting (height-for-age) among children under age 5 in Africare's three main zones of influence before and five years into the program.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
To estimate the counterfactual, Africare drew on rates of stunting in comparable non-participating zones of Tanzania. Participating and non-participating zones were similar in baseline stunting prevalence and mothers' practice of breastfeeding.
