Official Charity Response

The change in amfAR’s rating from four to three stars is due to Charity Navigator’s calculation of a charity’s program growth, to which it applies a standard formula. Unlike most other organizations that can spend freely on program growth, amfAR funds some very large scientific research grants that are subject to peer review and, in the case of clinical trials, to an Independent Review Board’s approval. These absolutely necessary scientific approvals can cause substantial delays in the expenditure of funds, compounded in some cases by the lead time required for the delivery of products to be used in these studies. These delays can lead to an apparent decrease in program growth, when in fact the decrease is temporary and is purely a function of timing.
