Official Charity Response

Over the past three years, Children International has made significant changes to its program strategy to move from a model of poverty alleviation to a model of poverty eradication for every child and youth that we serve.  Our vision is that every child graduates from our program healthy, educated, employed and empowered to break the cycle of poverty and be a positive agent of change in his/her community.  As a result of that, we are drastically reducing gift in kind transfers (mostly textbooks) that are inconsistent with the evolved program strategy.  These drastic reductions in the gift in kind transfers affect the way that Charity Navigator rates our Program Expense Growth (where we receive 3.08 points out of a total of a possible 10) but enable us to free up critical cash resources to invest in health, education, empowerment and employment programs.  Over the last three years, our cash investment/child served has grown by 30%.

There is a second factor affecting Children International’s 3-star rating out of a possible 4 stars.  Charity Navigator’s Working Capital metric requires a charity to have over one year’s worth of expenses in reserve to earn a perfect 10 points.  Children International received 5 out of the 10 possible points, because we hold roughly 1/3 of a year’s expenses in reserves.  With a predictable and consistent revenue stream and with the availability of assets that can be easily liquidated in case of significant changes, we believe that most of our cash needs to be hard at work delivering life transforming programs and services to our children and youth, and not  in reserves.  That is what best delivers on our mission and what our donors expect from us.
