Official Charity Response

The Children's Defense Fund changed is fiscal year calendar. This resulted in our FY2018 IRS 990 representing nine months of fiscal activity rather than twelve months (1/1/2018 through 9/30/2018) as the "stub" year in between our prior fiscal year calendar (January through December) and our new fiscal year calendar (October through September). While the FY2018 990 reflected signifcant grants in CDF's net assets, it is the policy of Charity Navigator not to adjust its ratings when the nonprofit's 990 does not cover a full twelve month fiscal year period. As a result, our next rating update with Charity Navigator will reflect our FY2019 IRS 990 results. This was filed in August 2020 and will be made publically available by the IRS for Charity Navigator to consider for its ratings typically within 3-6 months after the 990 filing date.
