The Food Bank of Western New York obtains food and support from public and private sources. Donated food, deemed "edible but unmarketable" by the food industry, is brought to our facility and redistributed to qualified charitable programs providing food and grocery items to the needy in the four county area of Western, New York. During fiscal year 2010 11,506,590 pounds of food and grocery items were distributed to 333 member agency programs . Each month, they serve nearly 75,000 less fortunate Western New Yorkers in soup kitchens, food pantries, kids cafes, shelters and other emergency food providers. Our vision is to continue to respectfully provide nutritional food, training education and hunger advocacy for our agency programs and their clients empowering them to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
Food Bank of Western New York primarily collects, warehouses and distributes food to front-line organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens. It also manages smaller programs that provide groceries directly to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$2 provides a meal to a person in need.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a score of 75 if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of Food Bank of Western New York.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. Food Bank of Western New York publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of Food Bank of Western New York’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
