Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity has grown from a grassroots effort that began on a community farm in southern Georgia in 1976 to a global nonprofit housing organization in nearly 1,400 communities across the U.S. and in over 70 countries. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

Impact Information

Program Name: MicroBuild Fund
Problem

Globally, over 1.6 billion people live in inadequate housing. 70% of these households improve their homes periodically, in small stages. Only 1% -2% of these families can access financing, as traditional mortgages only work in formal markets and do not serve the incremental building practices of the families at the base of the pyramid. Microfinance institutions could be a source of home improvement microloans, but currently only 2% of the industry's global portfolio is allocated to housing.

Strategy

MicroBuild offers wholesale loans and advisory services to address the two key barriers that prohibit lenders from expanding operations and therefore, deny low-income households access to affordable housing loans. Impact studies have shown that expanding access to affordable housing loan products, combined with construction advisory services when necessary, leads to improved quality of living conditions associated with greater health, education, income and savings.

IF:THEN

IF low-income households have access to affordable housing loans and construction advisory services that meet their needs,...

THEN they would be able to finance quality improvements to their homes, improving their overall health and well-being.
