This charity has an official representative registered with Charity Navigator.
After several consecutive years with a top 4-star rating, Medical Teams International's overall rating by Charity Navigator was recently adjusted from 4 to 3 stars. Charity Navigator ratings are based on two measurements: (1) Financial and (2) Accountability and Transparency. While Medical Teams' Financial rating dropped with the most recent analysis, our Accountability and Transparency rating remains a perfect score. The combined measurements caused our overall score to be 89.39, just below the 90 points cut-off for a 4-star rating. Our financial score decrease is related to a decline in the value of medical health supplies shipped by Medical Teams; this decrease impacts our in-kind revenue and expense, not our cash activities and program expense. We continue to ship medical supplies and over-the-counter medications around the world; in fact, during the last reporting year we shipped 1,388 pallets of supplies to stock medical clinics in Syria, Pakistan, Guatemala, and the United States. Although the amount of medications and supplies shipped is in line with previous years, the valuation decreased. This is because we have shifted away from medicines, which have a high financial value, toward medical supplies and over-the-counter medicines, which have a lower financial value but are still critical for helping save lives around the world. Over the past several years, the pharmaceutical industry, which donates medicines to non-profits, has consolidated and also narrowed their partners to large, specialist agencies. Medical Teams evaluated its position in light of these industry changes, global humanitarian needs and standards, and its calling: "Daring to love like Jesus, we boldly break barriers to health and restore wholeness in a hurting world." We decided to focus not on distributing pharmaceutical drugs, but on meeting the health needs of people in crisis through direct medical service and strengthening the community and health systems in the countries where we work. As a result, the organization is growing rapidly outside of the medical health product area, serving even more people directly and through volunteers than ever before with life-saving medical care.
