Impact Information

Classy created Progress to help nonprofits and social enterprises articulate their performance by combining qualitative insights on program strategies and beneficiaries, with quantitative metrics on social problems, short term outputs and long term intended outcomes.  Learn More about Impact Information.
Program Name: Flying Eye Hospital
Problem

285 million people in the world are blind or visually impaired, yet 80 percent of all eye conditions can be prevented or cured. Ninety percent of people with visual impairments live in developing countries, so we focus our efforts in areas of highest burden in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Access to quality eye care, a highly cost-effective way to reverse the cycle of poverty, is severely limited in many of these countries where there are as few as 1-3 ophthalmologists per million people.

Strategy

Orbis volunteer trainers have traveled to 92 countries throughout the world to provide short term training sessions, working hands-on with doctors, nurses and medical technicians on board the Flying Eye Hospital and in local partner hospitals. Through Cybersight, the Flying Eye Hospital, and in-country partners, our hands-on training and live, on-line telemedicine tools eliminate the distance that separates the world’s leading ophthalmic professionals from their peers in the developing world.

IF:THEN

IF professionals with the right skills, knowledge, and equipment to effectively treat and prevent blindness are operating in communities around the globe,...

THEN the goal of ensuring comprehensive eye health for all becomes possible.
