The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank's mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin, where one in four neighbors is at risk of hunger. We envision a community where everyone is able to obtain enough nutritious food in a dignified manner to support the health and well-being of themselves and their families. We address hunger head on: from our pantry network and home-delivered groceries, to our nutrition-education classes and CalFresh food-stamp enrollment, we work in many ways to nourish and empower neighbors in need. Every week, 30,000 households count on us for food assistance. Nearly 60 percent of what we distribute is fresh fruits and vegetables. Learn more at www.sfmfoodbank.org

Impact Information

This charity has reported a measure of cost-effectiveness: how much impact (per dollar) your donation will have on the charity's social outcome. The cost-effectiveness calculation was performed using protocols developed by ImpactMatters, an independent auditor of philanthropic impact.

For nonprofits that run multiple programs, we highlight the impact of one program below.  Learn More about Impact Information.
Program Name: San Francisco-Marin Food Bank
Program Activities
San Francisco-Marin Food Bank primarily collects, warehouses and distributes food to front-line organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens. It also manages smaller programs that provide groceries directly to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$2 provides a meal to a person in need.
Impact Assessment
5/5
Assessment Benchmark
Impact assessments of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive a 5/5 assessment if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a 4/5 assessment if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a 3/5 assessment.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
