Problem

Too many students are disengaged in school and under-prepared for success in college and career. Young people who don't participate in leadership programs are less likely to do well in school, be involved in their communities and positively transition to adulthood. The 21st century workplace requires employees to have soft skills (communication, problem solving & critical thinking, teamwork) that are not honed in school.

Strategy

BYV invests in teams of youth from local community centers and organizations to develop, launch, manage and sustain community benefiting ventures, and provides them with ongoing training, mentoring and financial support to actualize their ideas. In partnership with the business community, BYV trains students to identify community needs and provides them with volunteers to help develop a business plan. Teams pitch their business plans for seed funding to implement their ventures.

IF:THEN

IF If young people are connected to and supported by local business professionals and companies through project-based mentoring, focused on developing soft skills such as communication, problem solving and teamwork...

THEN Then young people will have a stronger desire to graduate high school, and be more successful in college and 21st century careers.

IF If young people are taught business concepts and given educational resources...

THEN Then young people will be empowered to create, launch, manage, and sustain community-benefiting business ventures.

IF If teams of young people are supported in solving for a community challenge...

THEN Then they will work together to create innovative solutions, overcome challenges, and make positive, lasting change in their community.
