Impact & Results Score

Program Name: Corps Member Program

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
Teach for America aims to improve the educational and economic outcomes of children in poverty by identifying and training college graduates, known as corps members, to teach in high-need public schools. Corps members receive training during the summer before the school year, then commence a two-year teaching commitment.
Impact Statement
$1,900 improves a student's educational achievement by the equivalent of an additional 2 months of learning in math and 4 months in science.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of teacher training programs are based on the cost of a month of learning to schools. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 75% the cost of a month of learning and a score of 75 if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the benchmark for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of Teach For America.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. What Works Clearinghouse reviewed 24 research studies on Teach for America. The review presented its findings as effect sizes on test scores in both math and science, which we translate into additional months of learning.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
The What Works Clearinghouse systematic review presents its findings as effect sizes: a measure of how the treatment group (students taught by Teach for America teachers) differs from the comparison group (students taught by non-Teach for America teachers). The review was comprised of 24 studies, seven of which had experimental or quasi-experimental designs.
